What Leadership Really Is—and Why Women Often Struggle With It

Let’s begin by unlearning what leadership is not.

For decades, leadership was defined by dominance, control, and hierarchy. Leaders were expected to be loud, decisive at all costs, emotionally distant, and authoritative. This model worked for a different time—but it does not serve modern workplaces or women leaders well.

Today, leadership is about influence, not control.

You are leading whenever:

  • Your behavior sets an example
  • Your words influence decisions
  • Others look to you for guidance
  • Your presence affects outcomes

You do not need permission or a title to lead.

However, many women struggle to see themselves as leaders because they were taught—directly or indirectly—to be accommodating, agreeable, and quiet. Assertiveness may have been labeled as “bossy.” Confidence may have been mistaken for arrogance. As a result, many capable women shrink their voice or delay stepping forward.

Empowered leadership begins with a mindset shift:

Leadership is not about fitting a mold. It is about creating impact.

An empowered woman leader understands that clarity is kindness. Giving direction is not being harsh. Setting standards is not being difficult. Leadership is service—but it requires courage.

Workplace Reality Example

Consider this situation:

Lerato is the most competent person on her team. She understands the work better than anyone else, but she avoids stepping up. When mistakes happen, she quietly fixes them instead of addressing the root problem. Eventually, a less capable colleague is promoted—not because they were better, but because they showed leadership.

Leadership rewards visibility, not silence.

This lesson is not about becoming loud. It is about becoming clear, intentional, and present.
